The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the first epics ever written, is to the highest degree Gilgamesh, magnate of Uruk and his brother like friend, Enkidu. The ancient Mesopotamians believed in a pantheon of deities and prayed to these deities for assistance with their problems. Each individual city also had their own patron deity. Not only were the gods essential in the religion of ancient Mesopotamia, but it was also important in the everyday life. This is exemplified when Shamash engages Enkidu. It teaches the reader that in ancient Mesopotamian culture it was believed that the gods could adopt mortals.
