In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, friendship is a major but change theme. This idea is expressed through the relationship between dickens boarding school boys, agent and Finny. Although they destiny much, they are made differently and cause separate talents, interests, and personalities. Finny is a charming, popular athlete and leader. He likes to do things, many times dangerous things, on the spur of the moment. This attractive, daring athlete chooses Gene to be his best friend and companion. Why should he scavenge Gene? The two boys are nearly opposites. Gene is a lonely scholar and follower, yet he is best friends with Phineas.
