In the story Thank You Maam Langston Hughes humourously delivers two different types of conflict Roger, the protagonist, confronts. Roger struggles with an external conflict versus some other character and an internal conflict against himself. Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones skirmish when he tries to steal her purse.
Whenever someone physically attempts to take something from a nonher there will be an obvious conflict between the people involved, which happens in this story. When Mrs. Jones drags Roger to her apartment she lets him go and he sees this as an opportunity to escape. Roger knows he must choose to do the slump thing, but there is a devil on his articulatio humeri that wants him to make the wrong decision. He knows he cannot leave because he needs to earn the trust of Mrs. Jones so she will not call the police.
