Countee Cullen And The Negro Artist

In reading Langston Hughes The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain (p. 1311-1314), I think Hughes is unfairly judging Countee Cullen and his work. Langston Hughes seemed to extradite the belief that Cullen was saying in essence he treasured to be White from the statement of I want to be a poet--not a Negro poet. According to Hughes, the true meaning of that is more sinister, more troubling, which is based on the fact that socially, and racially, black or the essence of Blackness is something to avoid. Essentially he is stating that Cullen, or any Negro poet with this reasoning, means, I believe, I want to publish standardised a snowy poet; meaning subconsciously, I would like to be a white poet; meaning behind that, I would like to be white.

Thats a quite a leap for Hughes to take with Cullens words. Especially since he states steadfastly that it is his belief that is what the artist means, but not a charter statement. I think in essence, Hughes is applying a historical posture of that the only way a poet who is Black could be interpreted seriously is to ignore or deny his ties to his race. Hughes argues that a Negro poet should write from the voice of Blackness, not just to simply write. He speaks of Cullens childhood in a middle enlighten environment as one nurtured to think being white is good, but to me, Hughes is prejudging Cullens background in a way much like how he claims Whites judge Blacks.
