Symbolism in Hills ilk White Elephants
Character motivation in Hills like White Elephants may best be interpreted by dint of symbols. In this story Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism to show devil antithetic viewpoints on an un indirect requested pregnancy. The Ameri git and Jig begin two choices, they can storage area the baby or be selfish and abort the baby and continue doing the same things they lease eternally done, Look at things and try new drinks.
Hemingway wrote this story to cast off a sense of reality. The couple can either conceal the baby and raise it, or have the operation and have everything. The girl who is now pregnant has a choice, to make the gentlemans gentleman golden or to have a family. The man, who does non want the baby, whole tests the baby as the only thing thats made us unhappy. If the girl decides to keep the baby thus they will raise the baby and not have everything, but if they decided to have an operation then they can have everything and go everywhere.
The setting is at a train station which make ups that they could go anywhere. They have so umteen choices of which way to go and what to do.
At this time in their career they have an important decision to make, they can get on the train and go to Madrid to have an operation or they can get on the train and go anchor home.
The white elephant symbolizes the woman creation pregnant and the baby being useless to them right now. Although, the baby would be a priceless gift to someone else, at the moment the man isnt so sure he wants the baby. Jig, wants to keep the baby and have a family and tells the man, we could have everything and everyday we make it more impossible. The hills symbolize the restraint of keeping the baby. The man cant see over the hills, which means he is blocked by the obstacle and cant see that he could be happy if they were to keep the baby.
