Northridge earthquake

Southern California is known for its many earth shakes. But no one was ready for one the size of the Northridge Quake. It happened eleven eld ago, on Monday, January 17,1994 at 4:31 A.M., one myocardial infarction away from Northridge, CA. Northridge is located at 34 degrees North and 11 degrees West, twenty miles northwest of Los Angeles. At the quakes focus, which was 18.4 km below the surface of the earth, the earthquake was measured at a 6.7 on the Richter scale. By the time it reached the surface, the epicenter, it had increased to a 6.8. It was caused by a Blind Thrust Fault. The huge Pacific Plate, which has been glide northwest for million of years, shifted diagonally and under the North American Plate, along the San Andres fault. In twenty seconds it caused pure terror for miles.

The bareness was enormous. More than 7,000 people were injured. Over 22,000 were left homeless. And the worst part, 57 people died. This number could have been oft greater had the quake occurred during business hours. This earthquake shook the San Fernando Valley so much that more than 25,000 buildings sustained major damage. The total estimated damages were about $44 billion. Seven gibibyte buildings were red tagged. This indicated that the building was severely damaged, and utterly uninhabitable, and should not be entered. Many more were yellow tagged. This rating meant that the building was somewhat damaged and only authorized for limited or certified use. Nine hospitals were closed. Nine freeway bridges collapsed, four of which were on I-5, a major highway used by over a million commuters daily. Multi-storied buildings sustained the most damage.
