What does this tell you closely Plutarchs view on Antony and Cleopatras relationship?
Plutarch, like many others, was very opinionated, when it came to the relationship between Antony and Cleopatra. In regards to this passage, Plutarch seemed to believe Cleopatra and Antony were opposites that complemented each other, at least on the surface. Although Cleopatra brought fresh delight and charm to Antonys hours of seriousness and cheer, (Plutarch, Perrin. B 1968 (trans.) volume 9) she would not relent, this gave her a certain tycoon over Antony level if he was not aware of it. Plutarch shows slightly admiration for Cleopatra and her ability to use her charm to manipulate even strong characters in order to seduce what she wants. A alike opinion of Cleopatra is seen when Plutarch describes the first meeting between Antony and Cleopatra.
Seeming to imbibe fun with each other, the two played pranks on others drank and went run together. This shows how, regardless of gender, Antony treated Cleopatra as an equal. While Plutarch talks about Antonys enjoyment in dressing like a servant alongside Cleopatra, he also mentions that he did this in order to argue with others and even to get hit.
Antonys actions in this instance suggest that deep down he was attempting to move Cleopatra with his masculinity and strength, rather than to make her seem his equal.
This idea is celebrated again further down Plutarchs passage: He was fishing once, and had bad luck, and was vexed at is because Cleopatra was there to see. (Plutarch, Perrin. B 1968 (trans.) volume 9) Plutarch describes the lengths Antony went to in order to save his pride callable to such an infatuation with Cleopatra. He couldnt allow himself to be made a mockery of or feel in any way inferior, in front of Cleopatra who he cute to impress. Although Cleopatra laughed and pretended to admire her lovers skill she wouldnt allow Antony to manipulate her and arranged for him to be tricked himself.
